Babysitting is an extension of parenthood. While mum and dad are away, you, as a babysitter assumes that precious responsibility to nurture a child. So, what separates not-so-good babysitters from the good ones? Read on below.

1. You must love children.

Let’s take the obvious out of the way. Good babysitters must love children. Period. If you don’t enjoy being with kids, babysitting is not for you.

2. You must be playful.

Parents don’t want babysitters who put children in front of the TV most of the time. They prefer those who are playful and creative — someone who loves games, crafts, and other healthy and fun activities.

3. You must be responsible.

Parents want babysitters whom they can trust and depend on. It’s always their dream to have a babysitter who’s capable of caring for their children responsibly.

4. You need to have experience.

If you think babysitting is easy, think again. Responsible babysitting takes a lot of preparation, skill, and confidence. Having a previous babysitting experience gives you an advantage. If you don’t have one, you can start inside your family by taking care of your siblings.

Ideally, parents want babysitters who can think on their own. They will also probably want you to have a CRB check, if you aren’t already CRB checked you can Apply for a CRB here. The best babysitter for them is someone who knows how to respond when an emergency arises or when a child is upset.

5. You must be sensitive.

Good babysitters treat the children they’re babysitting as their own. You must be willing to put the child’s needs and whims above your own. Although you may not always love to play tea party, as long as it makes the kid happy, then you should happily oblige.

6. You must be punctual.

A good babysitter is always on time. If you are running late, be sure to give the family a heads up. If you can’t come to work, do them a favour by informing them a week in advance. Being proactive in your schedule makes your employers more confident in your ability to take good care of their children.

7. You must be patient.

Patience is a virtue. And it’s something that you need to have an endless supply of when dealing with children. For example, you must exercise patience when reminding children of their chores. Though they obey (most of the time), they need constant, gentle reminders and time and space to get things done.

Are you ready to become a babysitter? Before you sit in an interview, take time to develop these traits that would make you the perfect candidate for the job!
